Marsha Potter Community Forestry Planner, SC
Marsha is the is the community planner for GIC’s South Carolina with a special emphasis on enhancing the resilience and equity of urban forests in the state. In her role, Marsha advocates for the expansion of current urban forests and educates the public about the abundant benefits they forests provide for clean air, water, cooling and outdoor enjoyment. She collaborates with South Carolina communities to develop and implement plans to expand and maintain urban forests. Through careful consideration of municipal ordinances, current infrastructure, and community goals Marsha works to create healthier, greener, and more resilient urban environments.
Marsha’s passion for urban planning and forestry emerged while completing environmental studies in graduate school. She interned with her local Planning and Zoning Department where she recognized a need for legislation to protect existing green spaces and promote the integration of green infrastructure in developing areas. Marsha is also an advocate for native species, endeavoring to enrich community biodiversity through the promotion of indigenous species in landscaping.
Marsha’s academic background includes a B.A. in Psychology, an M.S. in Clinical Psychology, and an M.S. in Environmental Science with a focus on Environmental Planning and Management. Marsha worked in the field of psychology for ten years before deciding to change career paths to pursue her passion to remedy environmental degradation. Outside of work, Marsha enjoys gardening, doing yoga, watching movies, and spending time with her four children, husband, and cat.
