The Town of Warren, Rhode Island has 37% tree canopy coverage town-wide. The Town’s Urban Area currently has 29% tree canopy coverage with a goal to increase that to 30% over the next 10 years. This Strategic Tree Canopy Plan provides a vision and a roadmap for protecting and maintaining the town’s urban forest and other natural assets, such as the rivers and streams. The plan is the first of its kind for the Town of Warren and includes the first canopy analysis ever completed. The plan calls for increasing the current tree canopy by 1% in the urban area, which requires active care for existing trees and expanding the Town’s tree-planting program to target low canopy neighborhoods.
This plan is the culmination of an eleven-month planning process that included workshops and strategic planning sessions led by the Green Infrastructure Center Inc. (GIC) with Town staff and community partners. The public was engaged in this process through outreach events, a community open house and community interviews
