The nonprofit Green Infrastructure Center is seeking an Executive Manager to serve as the Executive Director’s right hand: leading organizational budgeting and operations, overseeing grants and contracts, supervising staff, and helping guide GIC’s strategic direction. About: Founded in 2006, the national, nonprofit Green Infrastructure Center Inc. (GIC) is a leading designer of landscape conservation planning and conserving nature for healthier communities. The GIC helps communities realize that nature is “green infrastructure” and shows them how to use natural solutions to address climate change, urban heat islands, public health, and increased social and economic equity. Position Overview: GIC employs 24 full-time staff, plus part-time staff, with offices in 4 states. GIC’s administrative department includes the executive director, the senior accountant, and accountant. The Executive Manager works directly with the Executive Director on organizational strategy and decision-making, directs budgeting and financial planning, oversees day-to-day operations, and supervises the accounting team. GIC’s accountants handle bookkeeping, payroll processing, and transaction-level accounting; this is a management and leadership position, not an accounting position. The Executive Director will mentor the Executive Manager across all aspects of running the organization, including program development, fundraising, partner relations, and board governance.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategy:
- Serve as the Executive Director’s principal deputy and advisor on organizational priorities, program direction, and grant pursuits.
- Help develop, implement, and track GIC’s strategic plan, annual goals, and performance measures.
- Develop and recommend organizational policies and procedures and ensure they are applied consistently across all offices.
- Represent GIC with partners, funders, government agencies, and the public as directed, and act for the Executive Director in their absence.
- Prepare and present financial and management reports to the Board of Directors and support board meetings and governance.
Budgeting and Financial Management:
- Lead development of the annual company budget, working with program managers and the accounting team.
- Review, update, and track the company budget throughout the year; analyze variances and recommend adjustments.
- Oversee cash flow planning and forecasting with the GIC accounting team.
- Review financial statements and use them to inform management decisions.
- Develop budgets for grant and contract proposals and assist with preparation of bids and proposals.
- Coordinate annual audit responses for the contracted audit firm.
Grants and Contracts:
- Oversee the portfolio of federal, state, local, and private grants and contracts, ensuring compliance with federal grant requirements and funder terms.
- Work with program managers and the accounting team to ensure timely completion of grant invoicing and reporting.
- Track project budgets and staffing against grant scopes and deadlines.
Operations and Administration:
- Oversee day-to-day operations of GIC’s headquarters and field offices.
- Ensure all corporate filings are submitted when required (federal registrations, state annual reports, property taxes, and other charitable registrations).
- Oversee payroll review and processing by the accounting team using the Paychex portal.
- Manage and negotiate contracts, subcontracts, and vendor agreements, and oversee insurance, technology, and office facilities.
Staff Management:
- Supervise the accounting staff and other staff as assigned; set work priorities, provide constructive feedback, and evaluate performance.
- Support staff professional development and help program managers grow their management skills.
- Schedule staff performance reviews, onboard new staff, and manage benefit programs.
- Lead recruitment, hiring, and personnel decisions with program managers and ensure compliance with federal grant requirements for employees.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable workplace culture across all offices.

Work Environment and Demands: Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. occasionally and/or negligible weights frequently. Must be able to remain in stationary position more than 50% of the time. Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer. Occasionally moves about inside the office to access file cabinets and office machinery. Occasional travel to GIC field offices and partner meetings may be required. Office located one block from Charlottesville’s lively downtown mall. Space is fully accessible to all physical abilities.
Degrees and Experience: College degree required. A master’s degree in business administration (MBA), public or nonprofit administration, planning, or an environmental field is preferred. Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience at a senior management level, including supervising staff, developing and managing organizational budgets, and managing federal and state grants. Nonprofit management experience preferred. Must be willing to have a criminal background check.
Required Knowledge:
- Organizational budgeting, financial planning, and interpretation of financial statements.
- Grant management and grant reporting.
- Federal grant requirements within the Code of Federal Regulations.
- Nonprofit management, governance, and human resources practices.
- Computer Software Skills: High proficiency with MS Excel. Must be literate in MS Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Familiarity with Intuit QuickBooks Online preferred.
- An accounting degree or CPA is not required; GIC has an in-house accounting team.
Compensation: Salary Range: $95,000 to $100,000 based on experience. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week salaried position. Full-time position benefits include paid leave for six federal holidays plus accrued leave @16 hours per month, and immediate enrollment in the company’s Health Plan, as well as dental and vision coverage. GIC’s retirement plan is offered after the first year of employment. This position follows state labor laws. This position is intended to be permanent. Supervisor: This position reports to GIC’s Executive Director and supervises the senior accountant, the accountant, and other staff as assigned.
Job Location: Work location is at GIC’s headquarters in Charlottesville VA. Employee must reside in Virginia within a maximum one-hour commute to GIC’s Charlottesville Office to allow for in-office work at least three days per week. Hours are flexible but must be worked within normal business hours.
